Overview:
A new 5,640 square foot one-story wood framed structure was constructed for use as an elementary education building on the Montessori campus in Brooklandville, Maryland. The building is located in the open space surrounded by existing occupied classroom buildings. New electrical and water services were brought to the building from Falls Road, a quarter mile away from the new building location.
Access to the new structure was limited and considerably difficult due to the proximity of the existing buildings. The work also had to be coordinated with daily school activities including student drop-off and pick-up times.
The new building includes three large classrooms, a full kitchen, bathrooms, meeting rooms and offices. Vaulted ceilings with skylights provide spacious and bright classrooms. IT systems were installed and connected to other buildings throughout the campus by adding underground conduits between the buildings.
The new building includes fire alarm and sprinkler systems. The fire alarm system was interconnected to other campus buildings. Two other existing buildings also had sprinkler systems installed along with new water services.
The new building exterior is maintenance free through the use of prefinished composite siding, trim, windows, and doors. Sitework included creating a building pad by raising the existing grade several feet using engineered structural fill. Sidewalks and canopies were provided to connect the new building to the surrounding existing buildings. Existing parking lots and driveways were milled and repaved.
Equipment and material deliveries due to Covid were a constant issue throughout the construction schedule. A.R. Marani was able to provide substitutes for materials and equipment to maintain the schedule.
